The paper reveals a new dimension of implementing the third mission of a university - through the activities rolled-out by Russian universities in their botanic gardens. For urban residents, botanic gardens, in addition to their main functions, are gradually becoming a place for integrating different population groups, from schoolchildren to pensioners.

We identified three stages of the transition: green opposition, green acupuncture with collaborative projects, and patchworked palimpsest with the institutionalisation of bottom-up initiatives. These stages constitute a response to an earlier period of top-down ‘terraformation’ that destroyed semi-natural habitats and implemented traditional landscaping. While the (re)greening transition cannot fully restore pre-construction habitats, the academic green spaces on campus now serve a wider range of functions, including aesthetic, social, regenerative, ecological, educational and scientific roles, thereby enhancing the cultural, regulating and provisioning ecosystem services provided by these spaces.

Through their own experiences of working in UK academic institutions, in the 2010s, three plant-obsessed academics (authors JM and JW and Paul Ashton of Edge Hill University) became increasingly concerned at the limited opportunities and initiatives for plant-aware students to network together and the consequent feelings of student isolation in the botanical community (Box 1).
Such a requirement has stimulated biodiversity research in public parks (Palliwoda et al., 2017), private gardens (Goddard et al., 2010) and university campuses (Liu et al., 2017; Wang et al., 2021) which can provide refugia for a diverse set of plant and animal species (Ives et al., 2016; Soanes and Lentini, 2019). University campuses (including college campuses), can be important components of green spaces in urban environments (Colding, 2007; Vallejo et al., 2009), especially in developing countries where private green spaces are often lacking (Goddard et al., 2010). For example, university campuses cover over 620 km2 of urban area in China (Zhang et al., 2018), and many are larger than 100 ha (Liu et al., 2017).
To date, UChicago is one of the only universities whose entire campus is classified as a botanic garden. Much of the improvements to the 217-acre landscape were cultivated by longtime Richard Bumstead, the longtime associate director for campus environment. Optimal levels of nature are not a silver bullet for the prevention and treatment of all mental health problems, nor can they act on the main causes of students’ stress, but they are an approach that can and should be applied for young adults in initial stages of depression and anxiety, and in conjunction with medical and social services, and increasing community-oriented actions. Windhorst and William [10] claim for three actions: first to raise awareness of nature benefits among university students and staff; second, to make interventions on the campus to improve its attractiveness for community use and for students’ well-being; third, to develop nature-based therapies.
